The Game of Thrones is an American TV Series directed by David Benioff and D. B Weiss for HBO, which was based on the novels created by George R. R. Martin. This series revolves around the story of nine noble families’ battle to take control of land called Westeros while fighting against ancient enemies.
In the Game of Thrones series, there are various weapons presented. These include daggers and swords, like Longclaw, Ice, the Oathkeeper, Widow’s Wail, and many more. However, not all weapons are equal. Some are powerful among the others, some are made out of rare steel, and some are deemed as ordinary, which does not possess any mystical powers at all. Nevertheless, weapons are essential in every battle.
While there are many weapons used by various wielder in the world of Game of Thrones, in this article, we are going to discuss about the sword called Needle. This sword was as thin and as pointy as a sewing needle –the sword Needle, wielded by Arya Stark.
What is the Needle?
The Needle is one of the weapons shown in the Game of Thrones series. This sword was wielded by Arya Stark, the third child and the youngest daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Since her childhood, Arya had a passion for combat, although as a Lady in the House of Stark, she is expected to act like a lady.
Growing up, seeing how she always practice with her sword, her father eventually had given her training through the swordsman Syrio Forel. Arya then has given so much importance to her sword that was later on served and saved her countless times.
The Needle’s Appearance
The Needle is a thin sword purposely designed for its owner, Arya Stark. When she was young, Arya had quite a small frame, which was ideal for her sword, the Needle. This sword was so thin that it was better to be used for piercing instead of cutting things through. It has a simple handle, while it’s pommel and guard has sophisticated details.
As opposed to what people think, the Needle isn’t made of Valyrian steel. Since it was given by Jon, and that Valyrian steel was rare and expensive, it will be difficult for him to have the materials for the blacksmith, in making a Valyrian weapon.
The Needle was simply made out of castle-forged steel in Winterfell. However, even though the Needle was not a Valyrian weapon, it is made out of high-quality materials.
The Origin and the Sword’s Name
Among Arya’s siblings, she was close to Jon Snow, and the two were very fond of each other. Before leaving for the wall, Jon Snow had given Arya a sword, the Needle. It was a sword created by a Winterfell’s blacksmith whose name was Mikken.
Jon had presented the Needle sword as a parting gift for Arya and told her that it was not a toy, so she better be careful using it. Ever since it was given to her, Arya loved the sword and always kept it by her side. As Jon told her that good sword have names, Arya thought of the name ‘Needle.’
The origin of its name, Needle, was partly because Arya hated sewing. During that time, Arya and her older sister, Sansa, were taught how to sew. Although they were sisters, Arya was quite the opposite of Sansa. While Sansa was lady-like, Arya was viewed as unladylike.
Since Arya was not so good at sewing, she then said: “Sansa can keep her sewing needles, I’ve got a needle of my own.”In addition, the shape of the sword somewhat resembled a needle, as the sword was thin and sharp like a sewing needle. With this, the name of the sword was very fitting.
The Abilities of the Sword Needle
While the Game of Thrones features a lot of magical and extraordinarily powerful weapons, there are still weapons that don’t possess any magical properties. This includes the sword wielded by Arya, the Needle. However, her sword was made of high-quality castle-forged steel that killed numbers of high profile people.
