The ongoing war on drugs
The war on drugs may not be quite the current headline topic it was a few years ago, but it is still the reality for US law enforcement. Even though it wasn’t called the war on drugs then, this anti-drug and alcohol effort has its roots back in the 1920s during Prohibition when the US government got involved in trying to stop illegal alcohol, nicotine, or cocaine. The war on drugs now includes marijuana, meth, and cocaine. Current efforts are to curb not only the use but also the production, transport, and distribution of illicit substances.

The CT-30 kit
Another valuable tool in narcotics detection and contraband detection is our CT-30 Kit. This kit, popular with drug interdiction units, includes grooved, stainless steel probes which extracts a sample of the interior of contraband hiding places like upholstery, packs, or in the ground. The thin, flexible Fiberscope contained in the kit, which has fiber optic lights and a video camera, allows officers and agents visual access to areas that would otherwise be impossible to search, especially in vehicles. These include the inside of car doors, fuel tanks, wheel wells, and other tight or hidden spaces.
Though the official war on drugs has been shelved because of public perception of it as a failure, the need for drug interdiction and contraband detection has not gone way. As long as there are illegal drugs and illicit contraband being moved into or across the US, law enforcement will continue fighting to keep the streets free of dangerous substances. It is essential that the forces engaged in this difficult task be supported with better and better technology.
