A short introduction to “I Love Lucy”

If you don’t know or haven’t heard of “I Love Lucy,” it is one of the landmark and groudbreaking sitcoms in American television. It made its debut broadcast in 1951 and would go on for the next six years, making it one of the longest-running US TV series.

The show stars Lucille Ball as Lucy Ricardo, her real-life husband Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo, Vivian Vance as Ethel Merz and William Frawley as Fred Mertz.

The show follows the life of the two main characters the ambitious but naive redhead housewife Lucy and her singer/bandleader husband Ricky. The comic elements are added with the inclusion of their neighbors and landownders Fred and Ethel Mertz. The four live at an imaginary apartment complex in New York City, where most of the episodes take place; sometimes the scenes occur at the “Tropicana,” a nightclub where Ricky performs for a living.

In later episodes, Lucy and Desi takes the viewers to other places, such as Florida, Hollywood, and even Europe. Towards the end of the series the characters moved from the Big Apple into a small Connecticut town.

The show has won numerous Emmy nominations, and won five awards, including Best Situation Comedy, Best Comedienne for Lucille Ball and Best Supporting Actress for Vivian Vance. It also became the first-ever show to be inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and ranked second in TV Guide‘s greatest television shows list, just behind Seinfeld.

Even today, I Love Lucy remains popular with the old and new generations of fans.
