Where Can You Fly Your Political Flags?

Most countries have specific places where you can fly your political flags. For example, in the United States, you can fly your flag on any government-owned property.

You can also fly it at homes and businesses, as long as it is not flown in a way that interferes with other people’s ability to see or use the property.

If you’re not sure whether it’s legal to fly your political flag like the Trump flags in your area, check with your local government or law enforcement officials. They can help you understand the laws that apply to your situation.

Here are some recommended locations to fly your political flags.

On a Flagpole

According to reports, the United States, Canada, and Germany are the top countries that deal with the flagpole business.

When displayed on a pole, it is common to fly your flag at the top of the pole. It means that the stars would be at the top left (the viewer’s perspective) if you were looking directly at it.

If there is more than one flag, they should always be flown from separate poles of the same height with the flags spaced evenly. There are many different types of flagpoles, and they attach to homes in a variety of ways. You may need help from a flag installer to figure out how to set one up in your yard.

On a Window

When displayed in a window, it is common to fly your flag vertically with stars at the top left (the view from outside).

If there is more than one flag, they should always be flown from separate windows of the same height with the flags spaced evenly. Many people will also fly their flag at half-staff to show respect for someone who has passed away.

On a Building or Structure

When displayed on a building or other structure, it is common to fly your flag horizontally with the stars at the top right (the view from outside).

If there is more than one flag, you should fly them from separate buildings of the same height with the flags spaced evenly.

On a Boat

When displayed on a boat, it is common to fly your flag from the starboard side (the right side as you face the front of the boat). The flag should be at the same height as the top of the mast and should be fixed in place to not flap in the wind.

At a Political Parade or Rally

When displayed at a political rally or parade, it is common to fly more than one flag simultaneously. The flags should always be of the same size and flown from poles of the same height, with the flags spaced evenly.

The flag on your right-hand side (the view from outside) represents your country and is called the “dexter” flag. The flag on the left is called the “sinister” flag, representing opposition to your country’s actions.

If you face the same direction as the person holding these flags, then your dexter flag would be on their right-hand side, and your sinister flag would be on their left-hand side.

If you are flying your political flag like the Trump flags outside, it is recommended that you use nylon or polyester flags instead of cotton ones. Nylon and polyester will hold up much better against adverse weather conditions than cotton.

It is essential to avoid using cotton if your flagpole is not metal and will not hold the flag in place during high winds.
