More Fan Memories of Oz

“I watched the annual broadcast of “The Wizard of Oz” with my mother since before I can remember. Being the youngest of five kids it was one of the few things just she and I did together. We watched every year, before and after cable TV. I tune in to this day even though I have long since owned it (first on VHS, then DVD). It is a classic film made even more special by the memories I have of watching it every year with my mother. Thank you for “The Wizard of Oz,” a movie that still makes me feel young at heart!”

“Growing up in Oklahoma I am no stranger to tornadoes. The Wizard of Oz is mine and my 7-year-old daughter’s favorite movie. I don’t know if it’s the fact that it is a timeless classic, the wonderful catchy songs, or the look on my daughter’s face each time she watches it, I just know that I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many times I have seen it and yet every time I do, it feels like the first time all over again!”

“From the time I was 5 when I was first allowed to watch the movie, my mother made a huge deal out of it. My childhood best friend was invited over to spend the night to watch the movie. My mother would turn the kitchen table into a movie theatre. She draped blankets over the top & sides, forming a dark space. She used an extension cord to plug in our tiny 13-inch TV and put it under the table. We grabbed tons of blankets & pillows to sleep on. We had popcorn & juice & candy while we watched. We did this every year from ages 5 to 13. Of course…we grew bigger, the TV grew bigger, and our legs extended out from underneath the table when we fell asleep, but it was absolutely imperative we never missed the yearly showing. Since then, I still watch it every year (sometimes more), I’m an avid collector and even my bathroom is an Oz-themed room. I get a lot of jokes from family & friends about my Wizard of Oz fetish, but it was my favorite movie then and always will be.”

“If I had to choose one “favorite memory” from watching The Wizard of Oz, I simply couldn’t. The Wizard of Oz was my childhood. I watched that VHS over and over until the tape literally broke and I had to buy another. I remember very vividly bringing it with me to my grandparents every weekend and watching it with my Grandpa. I still to this day (at age 21) am able to recite every line of the movie. One might think that this passion for the film would fade as time goes by, but the opposite actually happened. I now have a new love for the movie and I am able to find new reasons to love it. When my friends find out about my love for The Wizard of Oz they often find it strange, but in reality, the strange thing is how someone doesn’t like The Wizard of Oz!”
