What is the Oathkeeper?

Under the command of Tywin Lannister, the Valyrian steel Ice sword that was formerly owned by Ned Stark was re-forged into two longswords. These two swords were namely the Widow’s Wail and Oathkeeper.

While the Widow’s Wail was given to Joffrey Baratheon, its sister blade, the Oathkeeper was given to Jaime Lannister as an heirloom of their House. However, in the subsequent series, it was shown that Jaime gave the sword to Brienne of Tarth as a weapon to rescue Ned Stark’s daughter, SansaStark.

What Does the Oathkeeper Sword Look Like?

The Oathkeeper sword, like most of the Valyrian weapon, has a rippled pattern on its blade. Its ripple was described as grey-ish black and red, with its red pattern almost as dark as grey. Also, the sword’s pommel has a lion with ruby eyes. It was depicted that these two lion eyes shine like two red stars. On the other hand, the sword’s sheath is glittering gold, decorated with red rubies and a row of lion’s head (a symbol of the Lannister House).

The Oathkeeper’s Film Appearances

Game of Thrones Season 4:The first appearance of the sword Oathkeeper was when Tywinn Lannister gave it to his son, Jaime Lannister. It was sort of a bribe for Jaime to step down as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and be the ruler of Casterly Rock instead. However, Jaime refused, but Tywin lets him keep the sword. Tywin also said that a one-handed man without a family needs all the help he can get, which implies that Jaime has been disowned.

After Joffrey Baratheon’s death, Jaime tasked the knight Brienne of Tarth to find Sansa Stark beforeCercei, his twin sister, found her. Before Brienne left, Jaime gave her a parting gift, a sword, and a new set of armor. Knowing that the blade wasre-forged from Ice, Jaime knew that Brienne could protect Ned Stark’s daughter using his own blade. Consequently, Brienne chose to name the sword, Oathkeeper.

During her adventure, together with Podrick, a knight of House Payne, they encountered Arya Stark and the Hound (also SandorClegane). Since Brienne was wielding a sword with a distinct Lannister quality, Aryaand the Hound were suspicious. Afterward, when the situation gets worse, Brienne used the Oathkeeper in a fight against the Hound. After a brutal fight, Brienne won by knocking the Hound off a cliff.

Game of Thrones Season 5: In the Vale of Arryn, the Oathkeeper was still in Brienne’s possession. She used her sword when they encounter Littlefinger’s guard. She was also seen using the Oathkeeper when she executed Stannis Baratheon, the Lord of Dragonstone.

Afterward, Sansa requested to travel to Riverrun, and persuade the Blackfish (also Bryden Tully), to join her and Jon’s quest in retaking Winterfell for the Starks. Following that event, they found Jaime and his army in the castle. Brienne attempted to return the Oathkeeper to him, saying that the purpose has been achieved. However, Jaime says, “It’s yours. It will always be yours.”

Consequently, the Blackfish accused Brienne of Tarth for being an alliance of Jaime, because of the Lion symbol on Brienne’s sword. Brienne, on the other hand, counters that Jaime gave him the Oathkeeper in order to fulfill his vow of protecting Catelyn Stark’s daughters.

Game of Thrones Season 7: At Winterfell, the capital of the Kingdom of the North, Brienne trained Podrick in swordplay. However, she used a training sword, as she kept the Oathkeeper in safety for real battles to come.
