How to Prevent Water Damage on Your Construction Site

Constructing any building is an arduous task, there are many different steps that need to be followed and completed before the property is finished. The principals are the same regardless of the scale of the building being built.

However, one element that is often overlooked is the water on site. While it would be great if it never rains, rain does happen and usually at the worst possible moment. Unfortunately, excess water can seriously damage your construction project and your finances. The simple truth is that most insurance companies will only cover a proportion of the damages.

In fact, water damage is often the biggest cause of issues and loss to any construction project. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent this from happening.

Submersible Pumps

These are invaluable during the construction process and afterward. There are a variety of great submersible pumps on the market. During construction, they can be sited at the lowest point in the build and will move the water away from the construction site. If the site is large then you may need more than one pump.

Once the construction is finished the submersible pump is set into the basement, in a pit. This means it is still at the lowest point of the building. Any water that enters the building will make its way to the lowest point. The pump has a sensor that detects the presence of the water and starts pumping. You will need to create a pathway to take the water out of the building and away from it.

Drainage Solutions

Another important step in the construction process is creating adequate drainage. This starts by making sure the ground around the site is slightly sloped, encouraging the water to drain away from the building.

If this isn’t possible then you should create channels that will collect the water and carry it away from the building. This can be done while the foundations are being dug, reducing the amount of water that can collect in the building.

Damp Proofing

A key element of any construction project is ensuring that adequate damp-proof membranes have been used. These prevent water that is naturally in the ground from rising up into the building. As rising damp can cause mold, subsidence, and even weaken the structure of the building, this is not a step you will want to skimp on. Dampproofing can prevent water from penetrating your build and damaging items before it is even finished.

Roof Testing

As your construction site transforms and you start thinking about the roof it is important to use a waterproof membrane before adding the final roofing material. Then, you should test this to ensure there are no leaks. This is important as roof leaks can often go unnoticed for extended periods, causing a significant amount of damage.

When thinking about water damage on your construction site simply look at where the water will come from and where it will collect. Identifying this will allow you to create prevention techniques and protect your project.
