Predictably, the Houston Texans struggled this year, finishing 4 and 12 despite having one of the most significant years by an NFL quarterback ever from Deshaun Watson. Oh, and Bill O’Brien got fired.
They Lied To DeShaun Watson
Of course, DeShaun Watson was upset about losing DeAndre Hopkins. On the other hand, his anger at that situation paled compared to his anger over the organization lying to him. If you cannot trust the people you work with, why should you stay there? The Houston Texans told DeShaun Watson they would listen to him when it came to the general manager search. Even though they did not necessarily have to take his advice, he did want to be involved. Unfortunately, DeShaun Watson was not involved at all. The Houston Texans hired a firm to help them find the next general manager and then ignored the results. They also did not circle back with Watson to ask his opinion on the situation. This was the last straw.
DeShaun Watson Wants Out
Ultimately, it is easy to see why DeShaun Watson wants out of Houston. Furthermore, he has a no-trade clause written in his contract. This means that he will only waive his no-trade clause for teams that he wants to go to. Therefore, he has all of the control over the situation right now. The Houston Texans could refuse to trade him; however, they would ultimately waste a year of their franchise just to prove a point. There is a high likelihood that DeShaun Watson ends up playing for another team next year. Otherwise, he will have to sit out the entire year.
