Haute Couture Meets Oz, and Helps a Worthy Cause

Marc Jacobs, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, Donna Karan, Betsey Johnson, and others are among the most esteemed and talented designers in the world, but they also belong to another noteworthy group. They’re all huge fans of the unforgettable film, The Wizard of Oz.

That’s why each of them and a host of other acclaimed fashion and costume designers have lent their talents to the creation of haute couture costumes for the classic film’s leading ladies—Glinda the Good Witch, The Wicked Witch of the West, and, of course, everyone’s favorite, Dorothy Gale.

If you’re wondering how haute couture and The Wizard of Oz go together, we encourage you to check out the one-of-a-kind works of art these fashion icons have created for Tonner Doll’s glamorous Leading Ladies Collection. This collaborative effort was established both to commemorate the film’s 75th Anniversary and to assist the efforts of Habitat for Humanity to create decent, safe, and affordable housing in partnership with low-income families.

According to Habitat for Humanity, whose vision is for everyone to have a decent place to call home, more than 1.6 billion people currently live in substandard housing. This remarkable group of designers has not only displayed their incredible talents in this exciting and fun initiative, but also their commitment to helping families who are less fortunate.

Joining the noted fashionistas mentioned above are designers Reem Acra, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Erickson Beamon, Chris Benz, Carlos Falchi, Douglas Hannant, Byron Lars, Jenny Packham, Charlotte Ronson, Anna Sui, Trina Turk, Carmen Marc Valvo, and Sue Wong, as well as acclaimed costume designers Colleen Atwood, Ruth Myers, and Lyn Paolo, in partnership with actress Kerry Washington.

The same spirit of creativity that made The Wizard of Oz one of the most loved films of all time is present in these remarkable creations, which are now on display at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York and available for bidding on eBay Giving Works at through September 14th.

Think about it. As a fan of this incredible movie, wouldn’t you love to own one of these priceless creations?
