How is he significant? What roles didhe play? Then, what’s with his Lightsabers? And how many Lightsabers he wielded? Read more to find out.

Who is Obi Wan Kenobi?

In the Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Force-wilder and a legendary Jedi Master. During the Fall of the Republic, Kenobi also becomes a member of the Jedi High Council. Aside from that, he used the alias of Ben Kenobi during the Age of Rebellion, where all the Jedi were being purged under the New Order.

Moreover, Kenobi also played different roles in the original and the prequel trilogy. He had portrayed a lot of roles in the series, but most notably, he was Luke Skywalker’s mentor. Portrayed by an English actor, Alec Guinness, the older Kenobi was seen introducing Luke the ways of the Jedi. He also guided Luke Skywalker during the fight against the Galactic Empire.

As well as that, the younger Kenobi was seen in the prequel trilogy of the Star Wars series. He then was portrayed by a Scottish actor, Ewan McGregor. In there, he was an apprentice of a Jedi Master, Qui-Gon-Jinn. He later becomes Anakin Skywalker’s mentor, before the latter falls into the dark side and become the Darth Vader.

In addition, Kenobi introduced the Lightsaber in 1977’s Star Wars. He described the Lightsabers as a Jedi Knight’s weapon, an elegant one for a more civilized age. Consequently, he was seldom seen without his notable blue Lightsaber. Although he was seen using other weapons during his career, he primarily depended on his blue Lightsaber.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s First Lightsaber

As an apprentice (a Jedi Padawan), Kenobi crafted his first Lightsaber. He based his weapon’s design partially from his master’s Lightsaber. His weapon first debuted in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Unlike Darth Vader’s and Kit Fisto’s Lightsaber, Kenobi’s first laser blade was not water-proof. With this, his weapon was seen shorting out on a scene where he landed in the swamp waters of Naboo in The Phantom Menace.

Furthermore, in a climactic fight scene in the Phantom Menace, Darth Maul gains the ground after killing Qui-Gon-Jinn and pushing Kenobi on the reactor pit. It was also during this battle where Darth Maul kicked Kenobi’s Lightsaber on the pit. However, Kenobi performed his Force-assisted flip and grabbed his master’s Lightsaber. Using Jinn’s blade, he was able to cut Darth Maul in half.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Second Lightsaber

Temporarily, Obi-Wan relied on his master’s Lightsaber before subsequently creating his second one. Before Star Wars: Attack of the Clone, Kenobi’s second blade was forged based on his first Lightsaber.

However, his second Lightsaber that he uses in the movie was slightly different from his first one. It was noted that his second blade had some water-proofing added. In fact, he used his Lightsaber in a rain-soaked fight against JangoFett, a bounty hunter, on Kamino. Also, with this Lightsaber, Kenobi was able to fightother bounty hunters, like ZamWesell in a space-nightclub. But just like his first Lightsaber, his second one was not seen again after it was confiscated by a lizard-bug Geonosians that captured him. After he was rescued from an arena execution, he was thrown a loaner Lightsaber.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Third Lightsaber

Upon becoming a Jedi Master, Kenobi then crafted his third and last Lightsaber. His final Lightsaber lasts longer than his two previous blades. He also relied on his third Lightsaber throughout the story of The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith, and Star Wars: Rebel, and finally, until his death.

In the Clone Wars, Kenobi used his Lightsaber when he dueled against General Grievous. His weapon was knocked away, although Commander Cody recovered it.  Subsequently, in the Revenge of the Sith, he fought with his former student, Anakin Skywalker (also Darth Vader) on Mustafar. During their battle, Obi-Wan was able to take Anakin’s Lightsaber.

When Darth Maul returned with newly fixed robotic legs, Kenobi and Maul –together with Maul’s brother, Savage Opress, once again engaged in a battle. In the following series, Star Wars: Rebels, Kenobi cuts Darth Maul with a single strike on Tatooine.

While still living in exile, Kenobi kept a low-profile while protecting Luke Skywalker from afar. Since he’s keeping a low-profile, he used an alias of Ben Kenobi and refrains from using his blue blade. Nevertheless, when he was attacked by a Wookie bounty hunter, Black Krrsantan, he then again used his Lightsaber. Krrsantan was able to leave the planet, but he was given his trademark scar on his face. Obi-Wan Kenobi was again seen in action using his Lightsaber during Star Wars: A New Hope against Ponda Baba.

During the first Death Star, Kenobi and Darth Vader fought again for the second time. It was then that Kenobi sacrificed himself and was killed by Darth Vader. After that, his third and final Lightsaber was seemingly destroyed during the Death Star.
