Lightsabers are probably the most notable weapon in the Star Wars universe. If there is any item that occurred from the Star Wars franchise that became recognizable throughout the world’s pop culture, it would be the Lightsaber.
There are various colorful Lightsabers used in the Star Wars epic battles. There are Luke’s Blue Lightsaber, Darth Vader’s Lightsaber, Mace Windu’s Purple Lightsaber, and many other Lightsaber. Along with its cool and dazzling blades are some stories behind them.
In this article, we will be delving into the origin of the Star Wars first double-blade Lightsaber, Darth Maul’s Lightsaber.

The Origin of Darth Maul’s Lightsaber
Ever since Maul’s introduction in The Phantom of Menace, he has been a popular and fan’s favorite Star Wars character. Beginning as a cool-looking villain, he has become a more developed tragic figure in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Although there have been several wielders that owned a double-bladed Lightsaber, Darth Maul’s has been the first to have it on The Phantom of Menace. Darth Maul had set the precedent that several numbers of the Star Wars characters would follow.
For instance, Maul’s brother also wielded a double-blade Lightsaber. Aside from that, the Imperial Inquisitor also had a double red blade, Lightsaber. There were also Jedis that owned such kind of Lightsaber. One was the Jedi Master Pong Krell, who has one blueand one green, double-bladed Lightsabers.
While these characters’ double-bladed Lightsabers were amazing in their own impressive way, Darth Maul’s Lightsaber will always be the most memorableamong all the two-bladed Lightsabers. This iconic Lightsaber is actually rooted in the Sith’s ancient knowledge. This was revealed in the Star Wars Lightsaber: A Guide to the weapon of the Force.
Using his master Darth Sidious’ Sith Holocron (also Dark Holocron), a device used by Siths to store information, Maul learned how to create his own double-bladed Lightsaber. He then created his Lightsaber based on the design he found on the Sith Holocron. Maul later used his Lightsaber to battle against EldraKiatis, a Force-sensitive Rutian, on the moon of Drazkel.
Darth Maul and his Lightsaber in the Battle of Naboo
Subsequently, Maul used his Lightsaber when he duelsagainst Qui-Gon Jinn, a member of the Jedi order, on Tatooine. During the battle, Maul was able to mortally wounded Jinn. He also duels against Jinn’s apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, when Darth Maul battles with Obi-Wan, Maul’s Lightsaber was cut in half. Despite this, Darth Maul managed to push Obi-Wan and kicked his Lightsaber into a pit. Obi-Wan saw his chance when Maul lowered his guard. He then jumped on Maul, and using Jinn’s Lightsaber, Kenobi killed him. Obi-Wan cut him in half, and Maul fell on the shaft along with his bisected Lightsaber.
It was later revealed that Maul didn’t really die. After falling on the shaft, Maul’s body was dumped on the Lotho Minor, the Junk Planet, for about twelve years. During Maul’s stay in there, Maul had built his spider-like body. Because of loneliness, Maul was driven to madness. However, he never forgot to revenge on Kenobi for what he did.
After years in the Junk Planet, he was found by his brother, Savage Opress. He also recovered Maul’s Lightsaber from the Lotho Minor. He brought Maul back to their home planet, Dathomir, to be healed by Talzin, their mother. Using Talzin’s power, Maul’s mind and body were healed, along with the new pair of cybernetic legs. Subsequently, Maul’s Lightsaber was given back to him. He then used his Lightsaber on his quest of vengeance against Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Quest of Vengeance against Obi-Wan Kenobi
During the Clone Wars, Sith Lord Maul, together with his brother, Savage Opress, went to the small planet called Raydonia. They killed human colonists to draw the Jedi master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. When Obi-Wan arrived, Opress and Maul subdue Kenobi. Darth Maul planned to use his Lightsaber to torture Kenobi. However, AsajjVentress, a Dathomirian female, fought Maul and Opress and helped Kenobi escaped.
Aside from spreading evilness in Raydonia, Maul and his brother also cut a swath across the Outer Rim spaceport. Maul used his Lightsaber to fought Finn Ertay, a Jedi Knight, and to a Nikto Jedi. Following this event, Darth Maul also raids the Cybloc transfer station. After finding the vault, he used his Lightsaber against Opress, proving that he is the master, and Opress is his apprentice.
Darth Maul’s Second Lightsaber
Subsequently, Maul and his brother, Opress, were caught by Pre Viszla, the Mandalorian Death Watch. Viszlatook Maul’s Lightsaber until Viszla agreed to an alliance between him and Maul. During this time, Maul had used his Lightsaber against various criminals such as the Black Sun and the Hutt Clan, as Maul was planning to build a criminal organization called the Shadow Collective.
Following the organization’s takeover of Mandalore, Darth Maul used his Lightsaber to duel against Viszla. Maul wins by beheading Viszla using Viszla’sDarksaber. In addition to his Lightsaber, Maul used the Darksaber to fight his former master, Darth Sidious. However, Maul had lost half of his double-bladed Lightsaber and the Darksaber. Maul lost his Lightsaber in The Clone Wars and used the Darksaber instead. Subsequently, in the Star Wars Rebels, Maul was seen wielding a new red double-bladed Lightsaber.
